Cooking for Everyone
This cookbook has been created to enable all people, regardless of their eyesight, to cook and bake together. To achieve this, sighted individuals, blind people, and those with visual impairments came together to develop a concept. Participants included young sighted individuals aged 9 to 12 from the school “Gemeinschaftschule auf dem Campus Rütli” as well as elderly women with no or declining eyesight. The book offers all conceivable formats for accessing the recipes, including standard print, Braille, audio, and video. The latter can be accessed and played using a QR code. The audio guides the listener step by step through the recipe, while the video demonstrates the entire process in English.
The idea for this cookbook was born gradually. As part of their English lessons, students created small cooking and baking videos, preferably featuring recipes from the countries of origin of their parents and grandparents. In class, they learned the necessary language skills for this purpose. Additionally, several visually impaired women have enriched our school for some time now through their volunteer reading mentorships.
At some point, the Berlin cultural project “Durchstarten” published a call for proposals seeking projects that enable people with disabilities to take the lead in their own initiatives in a very low-threshold manner, offering financial support for such endeavors.
With this, the idea was outlined. Several working meetings later, the idea turned into a concrete plan. To bring sighted and visually impaired people closer together, we not only developed this cookbook but also organized several cooking events where we cooked together using the featured recipes.
